New exercise trend hits Australia

The latest health and fitness routine sweeping the globe has arrived in Australia.

The physical fitness regime, dubbed Cardiolates, mixes the concentration and muscle control of pilates with mini-trampolines to promote cardiovascular well-being.

The new exercise technique has been found to burn 40 to 50 per cent more calories than running by the Journal of Applied Physiology, and has been used by NASA to increase the bone density of its astronauts before and after space travel.

Developed in New York, the workout regime has enjoyed popularity with fashion designer Kimora Lee Simmons and former tennis champ Martina Navratilova.

Wellcentred, located in North Sydney's CBD, is the first studio in Australia to offer the new exercise technique.

Julia Balaz, Founder of Wellcentred, says 'Cardiolates combines the alignment principles of Pilates with the cardiovascular and health benefits of rebounding. The owners of the leading New York studio, Pilates on Fifth, were the first in the world to develop this cutting edge exercise in 2006. Wellcentred is the exclusive representative of Cardiolates in Australia.'

'Athletes, gymnasts and dancers are turning to Cardiolates to improve agility, balance and coordination, while cancer patients and people with joint problems, such as arthritis, are also using the exercise to assist with their rehabilitation and fitness programs.'
