Queensland study says tapping pressure points leads to weight loss

GENTLY tapping pressure points on the body will help lead to weight loss, a university researcher in Queensland says.

A Griffith University study of 96 people over 12 months found psychological acupuncture played a significant role in weight loss by reducing food cravings in people who are overweight or obese.

Griffith psychologist Dr Peta Stapleton said the participants lost a significant amount of weight and they've kept it off, with one losing 10 kilograms.

"We now have solid data that shows there was a significant reduction in BMI (Body Mass Index) from pre to post the 12 months study," she said.

"Psychological acupuncture therapy can have an immediate effect on reducing food cravings, result in maintaining reduced cravings over time, and impact upon BMI in overweight and obese individuals."

The participants undertook four psychological acupuncture sessions, each lasting two hours.

The treatment involved tapping eight pressure points on the face and body, while participants focused on particular emotions and thoughts.

Dr Stapleton said because the technique helps override emotional eating at a subconscious level, it was more likely to be effective in the long term.
