Rogue Zumba operators in cross-hairs

ZUMBA Fitness instructors in WA have been warned of potential legal actions from the international parent company targeting dodgy operators worldwide.

Zumba Fitness, LLC, the company behind the popular fitness workout, filed five suits last week in U.S. District Court in California and is preparing to file several more in the US and the UK.

The legal proceedings deal with copyright and trademark infringement, issues relating to state and Federal unfair competition and unjust enrichment claims against persons trading in counterfeit Zumba products.

Zumba Fitness is presently investigating and evaluating enforcement proceedings in markets including Europe, Australia, and the Asia-Pacific region.

The company expects to institute proceedings during the next year.

“This is just the beginning of an enforcement component to our global efforts in the fight against the unauthorized use of our brand and copyrights, including piracy and counterfeiting,” the company's general counsel, Jason Buratti said.

Zumba classes are available at more than 90,000 locations worldwide including various locations across Perth where the blend of Latin and international rhythms has attracted many fitness junkies and those looking to shed a few kilos.
